Dorset Storm (25, 17, 8, 27) 72

Gosport Scorpions (21, 6, 9, 11) 47

Dorset Storm Under 16s National League side made their final journey of 2013 to their closest opponents, Gosport Scorpions on Saturday afternoon.  Storm entered the game looking to finish off 2013 with another good performance, but would face a big test in the form of a big and physical Gosport side.

Storm started with Deividas Liveris and Daniel Riggs in the front court whilst Christian Farah, Will Taylor and Tom Storey were in the back court.  Similarly to last week it was Gosport who opened the scoring in transition with a lay-up.  Storm soon got going though, as Tom Storey attacked the basket and finished inside despite a foul.  Storey added two more before Taylor got to the foul line and stroked both home to give Storm a 2 – 6 lead.  Storm continued to tick over well offensively as Bradley Bennett, Riggs, and Liveris from down town all added scores in the quarter. Unusually it was at the defensive end that Storm were struggling, as good defensive possessions where continuously not finished off by securing a rebound.  Through tough work on attacking the offensive glass Gosport kept themselves in the game.  At the end of the opening quarter Storm led 25 – 21.

Storm started the second quarter with more good offensive play as Bennett and Storey both converted from behind the arc plus a score from Mahoney gave them a 7 – 0 start to the quarter.  Dorset Storm Basketball Clun NBL Under 16s versus Gosport Scorpions December 20132Mahoney, Liveris and Storey also set about clearing up the defensive glass as they all pulled down two defensive boards early on.  Storms defence continued to be solid as they put good ball pressure on, and also managed to adjust to playing some great post defence. In the closing minutes of the quarter Bennett and Taylor scored eight points between them as Storm stretched their lead into double figures.  A strong drive and score from Josh Westlake in the final minute saw Storm take a 27 – 42 lead into the half time break.

The third quarter opened with Taylor nailing a three ball from the wing, and Storm followed this up with a series of good defensive possessions.  Liveris and Riggs in particular stood out for Storm as they set the tone with some physical interior defence and good rebounding.  Farah was quick on the perimeter to mop up any ball handling mistakes and Storm turned the screws at the defensive end.  At the offensive end Storm struggled to make any inroads as the shots failed to drop.  Storey and Bennett were the only two players to add additional scores for Storm, who still held a lead at the end of low scoring third stanza, 36 – 50.

It was Gosport who started the final quarter the brighter of the two sides as they got back to back scores inside.  Dorset Storm Basketball Clun NBL Under 16s versus Gosport Scorpions December 20133Storm continued to be scoreless at the offensive end for the opening three minutes of the quarter before Harry Batson broke the drought for Storm from the foul line.  From that point on it was all Storm as Farah started to pull the strings on offence with consecutive finishes at the basket before he found Bennett for a score in transition as a 7 – 0 run got Storm going.  Some great defence again kept Gosport from getting easy looks at the basket and back to back scores from Riggs just after the midpoint of the quarter saw the Storm lead grow to 20 points.  Storm finished the game off with some good ball movement to take advantage of a Gosport defence that had to chase the game as they eventually took a 47 – 72 victory.

For Storm it was a great team effort and it was great to see confident performances from all the team who have come a long way over the opening half of the season.  Bradley Bennett led all scores with 20 points, backed up by four other players in double figures. After a poor first quarter Storm tightened up their defensive effort and every player contributed to an improved rebounding effort over the final three quarter.  Lead coach Luke Kemish was pleased with the effort his players showed and the adjustments they made:

“We had a poor first quarter, we didn’t control the tempo or match the oppositions intensity – especially in and around the basket – and that saw us concede 21 points.

Dorset Storm Basketball Clun NBL Under 16s versus Gosport Scorpions December 20135The important thing is the players went out in the second quarter and put it right.  They made the adjustment, learnt from their opening 10 minutes and made sure that it wasn’t an issue for the remainder of the game.

That level of improvement sums up the team so far this season, they have been hungry to improve, worked exceptionally hard for the most part and stuck together as a team.  They must remain determined to maintain their improvement as we head into 2014.”

Storm now have an extended break over the Christmas and New Year period as their game scheduled for Saturday 4th January has been postponed.
