SWRL Under 16s Vs Somerset & Bristol 30-11-2013

Note: Bristol informed Dorset and Somerset on Friday that they would be unable to attend the tournament so one full length game was played instead of the shorted games normally played in this competition.

Under 16 SWRL team where in action for the first time this season on Saturday as they faced Somerset Tigers at Rossmore Leisure Centre on Saturday.

It was a scrappy opening period, as neither team play particularly good basketball, and after four minutes the score was 2 – 1 to Somerset. During the second part of the quarter Somerset began to take control of the game as poor decision making on offence  allowed Somerset to take and 11 – 3 lead. A three point shot from Seth Nay just about kept Storm in touch as they trailed 11 – 6 at the end of the first period.

Dorset Storm Basketball Club South West Regional League Under 16s Saturday 30th October 201322Storm came out with much more focused in the second quarter as Harry Jackson, Harvey Nichols and Marc Negrillo all scored baskets to quickly reduce the deficit to 12 – 11. As the quarter went on the teems continued to be evenly matched as a 6 – 0 run from Storm saw them finish the first half 22-19 up.

During the third period there was once again nothing to separate the teams. In a low scoring and scrappy period the teams were tied scoring six points each. Storm were fortunate that Somerset missed eight foul shots, which could have seen them take the lead by the end of the period. This meant that Storm still held a three point lead 28 – 25 with 10 minutes to play.

Storm started the final period well as a three point shot from Harry Jackson in the third minute gave them a 33 – 25 lead. Dorset Storm Basketball Club South West Regional League Under 16s Saturday 30th October 201308Somerset scored six in a row during the fourth minute to reduce that lead down to two, 33 – 31. Both teams then struggled to put the ball in the basket combining to miss 12 out of 14 free throw attempts during the next three minutes. Storm still held a 36 – 32 lead with exactly two minutes to play. In a final two minutes was littered with poor passes and poor shots from Storm which resulted in them scoring just a single point as Somerset ran in 10 at the other end to make it a 13 point turnaround and take a 42 – 37 win.
