Lacklustre displays from both Storm teams in SBL Under 16s

Dorset Storm Basketball Club Solent League Under 16s Friday 22nd November 201309Salisbury now only team in league with 100% record in Solent League Under 16s.

Storm I opened up the evening taking on Salisbury in their first game of the season.  A tight opening few minutes saw neither team produce anything to write home about with the score tied at 2 – 2 at the mid point of the opening period.  Salisbury did then score a couple of times as they finished 2 – 7 up at the end of the first period.  Salisbury continued to play with far more aggression in the second quarter as Storm I lacked any pressure defensively.  At the half Storm I still trailed, with the scoreboard reading 11 – 6.  Storm I started the third period with more energy and reduced the deficit to one point quickly.  A lapse in the final minute of the quarter though allowed Salisbury to extend their lead back out to four and finish the quarter 10 – 14 up.  A low scoring final quarter saw neither team register a basket until the sixth minute. Back to back baskets from Taylor for Storm I were split by a foul shot from Salisbury as Storm I trailed by one heading into the final minute.  Despite getting several looks at the basket Storm I could get a basket as Salisbury held on for a 14 – 15 win.

Storm II faced Salisbury in game two of the evening.  Dorset Storm Basketball Club Solent League Under 16s Friday 22nd November 201314Salisbury started the stronger of the two teams as they regularly found baskets throughout the period.Baskets from Josh Westlake and Jack Axel kept Storm II in the game, but a 7 – 0 run from Salisbury gave them an 8 – 4 lead at the end of the first period. It got worse in the second period for Storm II as they could manage just four points in the quarter as Salisbury scored 13 to take a commanding 8 – 21 lead at the half.  Storm came out with more fight in the third period as Jack Axon, Josh Westlake and Nathan Mahoney all scored baskets to help Storm II reduce the deficit to 16 – 23 at the end of the quarter.   Storm II found the final hurdle too much to overcome in the last period as Salisbury once again dominated and ran out 21 – 33 winners.

The final game of the evening was between the two Storm sides.  With the lack of intensity and energy shown by both sides it didn’t look like it would be a classic.  Indeed it wasn’t. Dorset Storm Basketball Club Solent League Under 16s Friday 22nd November 201327Storm I came out with the type of urgency that both Storm teams had been lacking in their opening games, Storm II did not.  By the end of the opening period Storm I had raced into a 15 – 4 lead.  The second quarter was more of the same although nine points from Josh Westlake and Nathan Mahoney at least saw Storm II get some points on the board. Poor defence saw Storm I make 16 trips to the foul line and that was enough for them to hold a 31 – 13 lead at the half.  A more even third period saw the teams exchange baskets early on but six in a row from Harry Jackson to finish the quarter again gave Storm I the momentum.  The final quarter was once again a more even contest but it was too little too late for Storm II as Storm I finished comprehensive winners in the second inter club game 46 – 28.
