Storm II beat Storm I for the first time this season, in exciting night at SBL Under 14s.Dorset Storm I opened Friday’s SBL tournament against Weymouth. Seth Nay and Marc Negrillo got Storm I off to a good start as they held an early 4 – 2 lead.  Weymouth through came back strong to finish with a 6 – 0 run as they led 8 – 4 at the end of quarter one.  Weymouth extended their lead to 12 – 4 early in the second period, but following a Storm I timeout Negrillo added two more baskets to help Storm I reduce the deficit to 12 – 8 at the half. The third quarter didn’t go Storm I’s way, as a lack of focus on defence and offence saw Weymouth dominate.  At the end of the third a lone basket was all Storm I could manage as they trailed 22 – 10.  The fourth quarter continued in much the same manner as the third, as Storm I couldn’t buy a basket.  Disappointingly, in the end Weymouth ran out 33 – 10 winners.

Game number two of the tournament saw Weymouth take on Storm II. Dorset Storm Basketball Club Solent League Under 14s February 2013 2 The game started tightly with both teams committing early fouls and getting onto the free throw line, by the midway point of the first quarter Storm II trailed 5 – 0.  Storm II came fighting back with scores for Rory Pearson, Owen Hale and a foul shot from Max Gilmartin which saw them trailed 9 – 7 at the end of the first period.  Storm II started the second quarter strongly with scores from Harry Jackson, Nathan Legg and Harry Batson helping them tie the game at 14 by half time.  The second half started with great intensity. Both teams attacked the basket but scores in the final minute from Rory Pearson and Nathan Legg gave Storm II a 28 – 25 lead at the end of the third stanza.  The fourth quarter continued to be tight but five points in the middle part of the period from Carl Gordula helped Storm II establish a small lead. They manage to hang on with baskets from Gilmartin and Jackson in the last minute seeing them home as Storm II won 41 – 35.

The final game of the tournament saw the two Storm teams face off.  Storm I started stronger as baskets from Nay and Scott Herron gave them an early 5 – 0 lead. Dorset Storm Basketball Club Solent League Under 14s February 2013 1Owen Hale came back with two baskets in a row to help Storm II to get back into the game; and a tight final few minutes saw Storm II lead by 7 – 6 at the end of the opening period.  Storm I had a quick start to the second period as baskets from Herron, Nay and Sabrina Lal gave them a 15 – 9 lead.  Storm II would not go away though as Gilmartin, Ingram and Jackson scored to help them recover and maintain their one point lead at half time, 17 – 16.  On the back of six points from Kofi Coustan Storm I again had a quick start to the third quarter, they lead 28 – 19 by the fifth minute of the period.  Storm II scored some late baskets with Gilmartin, Jackson and Pearson all registering points but Storm I now held the lead, 30 – 25 with one quarter to go.   For a change it was Storm II that started the final quarter the quickest, eight points from Jackson and Batson helped them get straight back into the game. An Owen Hale basket in the sixth minute gave Storm II a 35 – 34 lead.  A basket from Nay have Storm I back the lead, but a Jackson basket and then some free throws from Gilmartin sealed the game for Storm II as they beat Storm I, 40 – 36.

It was a great nights basketball from all three teams.  Weymouth are now out in first place, but Storm I and II are tied in second place.
