Terrific Opening to Summer League

The 2012 Dorset Storm Summer League launched on Saturday at Rossmore Leisure Centre.

The Mini League action was first with the Dolphins and Sharks getting the 2012 Summer Leagues off to a cracking start.  Neither of the teams could be separated in the opening half.  In the second half it was the Dolphins that came to life as they came from four points down to win 18 – 10. Game two saw the Sharks and the Whales play each other.  Early on the Whales were untouchable, as they hardly missed a shot in the opening half.  They continued to be red hot from anywhere on the court as they torched the Sharks 35 – 13. The final game of the day in the Mini League was between the Dolphins and the Sharks that started with the teams exchanging blows early on. The second half though belonged to the Whales as they scored 18 points to cruise to their second victory of the day 30 – 15 and the top of the table position.

The Darts and the Arrows got the Intermediate League off to an impressive start.  In a game of runs, it was the Darts that led at the half 21 – 14.  The Arrows started their fight back early in the second half, and the game was quickly tied at 21.  A strong end to the second half saw Darts hold the lead going into the final minute.  Despite two baskets in the last 30 seconds the Arrows fell just short as the Darts won 32 – 31.  Game two saw the Darts and the Bullets face each other.  The two teams exchanged baskets throughout the contest.  With a minute to go the Bullets trailed 19 – 21.  Max Gilmartin nailed two baskets in the final 60 seconds to take the game 23 – 21.  The final game of the day for the Intermediate League was between the Arrows and the Bullets.  The Arrows got off to a flying start with an 8 – 0 run.  The shorthanded Bullets began to feel the effects of back-to-back games as they dealt poorly with the Arrows pressure defense.  They continued to fight in the second half but the Arrows picked up the win, 34 – 13, meaning each team finished with one win and one loss in the Intermediate League.

The Junior League got going with the Outlaws playing the Pirates.  The first half was pretty close with a couple of Conor James baskets giving the Outlaws a 15 – 10 lead at the half.  Starting the second half the Pirates were blown out as the Outlaws went on a 19 – 0 run to blow the game wide open.  In the end a convincing 42 – 20 win for the Outlaws was the shock result.  Game two was between the Pirates and the Smugglers.  Another fascinating first half saw the teams continuously exchange blows with the Smugglers holding a slender 20 – 18 advantage at the half.  The teams remained close throughout the second half; only in the final couple of minutes were consecutive scores from Seb Darby and Charlie Harland enough to give the Pirates a 37 – 32 victory.  The final game of the day was between the Smugglers and the Outlaws.  The Outlaws came out firing, with the Smugglers without influential guard Jack Kelly, it looked like it could be a tough final game for the Smugglers who only managed eight first half points.  To their credit they never stopped playing hard, Tom Hennessy and Bruce Mercieca both scored heavily down the stretch to show good fighting spirit for the Smugglers who will hope to be back to full strength next weekend.  As the Outlaws raced to their second victory of the day, they claimed top spot at the end of Week One.
