SWRL Under 16s Vs Gloucester 24-03-2012

Under 16s chalk up another victory in final game of the season

Match Report

Dorset Storm (20, 13, 16, 24) 73

Gloucester Blazers (2, 10, 19, 12) 43

On Saturday 24th March 2012 the U16’s travelled to Gloucester to play their final match in the South West Regional League.

As with previous away fixtures the coach decided to go with a small squad giving the chance for players selected to get plenty of court time, which was good for the team but also relied on them being well disciplined i.e. not fouling out! As with previous matches Hennessy and James started in the back court with Old ,Kapuskinski and the returning Patino in the front court.  High intensity play was asked for by the coach and that was exactly what the team gave. This was highlighted in the first 60 seconds with two steals by Old setting up two unopposed baskets. Blazers were found wanting as Storm surged to a 20 – 2 first quarter lead. The second quarter was much like the first with Hester and Harland coming off the bench to also mix it with the Blazers continuing the good play of the first quarter to end the first half 33 – 12 up.

Going into the third quarter it was clear the home team would have to up their intensity to match that of the Storm, this they did to good effect, spoiling a lot of plays and driving and rebounding well. This was married with Storm becoming frustrated and not playing as a team but as five individuals. A timeout was called whereby the team was given a few home truths to which there was some good response and discipline restored to finally end the quarter 49 – 31.

The team were able to see entering the final quarter that Blazers couldn’t match their team play but if given the chance could spoil and hustle and compete having a full squad of 12. As a result the fourth quarter started as with the first and albeit the Blazers coach was heard to say Storm were getting tired, the team again upped their play and won the last quarter 24 -12 giving an overall result of 73 – 43.

With this result came an end to the season.   In total the U16’s had 12 fixtures of which four were walkovers that left eight games played. Out of these games played came the following statistics: played 8, won 8, lost 0, points for 553, point against 268.

Other teams in the league consisted of:- Bristol Storm, Gloucester Blazers, Plymouth Marjons, Stroud Sharks and Wiltshire Wolves.

All in all this was a good taster for the next season when the some of these under 15’s together could well be involved in a under 16s National league squad.
