Under 14s I back in SBL action

Under 14s I get back to winning ways in Solent League

Dorset Storm Under 14s were back on the court in the Solent Basketball League on Friday night.  In the opening game of the tournament Storm faced Salisbury.  In a slow paced first quarter neither team managed to score consistently in and around the basket, as the first quarter score ended 5 – 8 in Salisbury’s favour.  Storm upped the defensive pressure in the second quarter resulting in several turnovers from Salisbury.  Two scores in the final couple of minutes of the quarter gave Storm a 14 – 10 advantage at the half.  Storm could not keep their momentum going in the third quarter as a disastrous quarter saw them trail 20 – 14 before a George Davey lay-up and Nathan Mahoney three got them out of jail, and saw them trail 19 – 20 on the buzzer.  Storm were in more dominant mood in the final quarter, as they won that seven minutes 14 – 3 to eventually win the game 33 – 23.

In the middle game Salisbury beat Weymouth 44 – 12.

In the final game of the tournament Storm faced Weymouth.  Storm had a sloppy start, littered with turnovers and missed opportunities, resulting in Weymouth leading 6 – 5 after one quarter.  Storm were much more awake in the second quarter as Bradley Bennett led the charge with six points in the quarter.  At the half Storm led 25 – 10.  If Storm thought that Weymouth would lie down then they were in for a shock, as every shot was challenged and Weymouth again kept their opponents in check.  By the end of the third Storm had failed to extend their lead significantly, led 34 – 17.  Storm played some good basketball in the final quarter, with solid defence providing a base to attack in transition.  Storm eventually ran out 44 – 19 winners.

There were two inconsistent performances from Storm who blew hot and cold all night.  In the end the two wins were enough, and take them clear at the top of the Solent Basketball League.
