Storm I get the win Vs Storm II in SBL Under 14s

First inter-club fixture of the season goes right to the wire.

Storm II opened up the tournament versus Weymouth.  Storm II were in dominant form early on, with Vince Ibay orchestrating the play.  Impressive defence regularly forced Weymouth into long-range shots that were contested on the perimeter.  By the halftime break Storm II lead 18 – 0.  As the game continued Weymouth stuck with their task and continued to put Storm II under pressure.  A good second half display though kept Storm II in front as they went on to win 33 – 11.

Storm I were in action against Weymouth in the second game.  Some good spacing at the offensive end allowed them to get off to a good start, with Nathan Mahoney benefitting most as he scored 10 first half points as Storm lead 18  – 2 at the break.  Storm I managed to keep their intensity and focus up in the second half with Will Taylor playing particularly well to net eight second half points as Storm I ran out 45 – 13 winners.

The final game of the tournament saw the first inter-club match up of the season as Storm I took on Storm II.  It was Storm I who got off to the better start as six points from Adriel Maranan guided them into an 11 – 2 lead early on.  A Storm II timeout though brought a new focus to their team and five in a row from Vince Ibay and a lay-up from Joe Stevenson brought them back into the game 11 – 9 at the end of quarter one.  Both teams were pressuring each other defensively and it was tough going to find an open look at the basket.  In the final minute of the half six unanswered points from George Davey and Lewis Pettitt gave Storm I a 19 – 12 lead.  Storm II started the second half the better of the two teams as foul trouble started to mount for Storm I.  At the end of the third quarter Storm II had the lead for the first time 23 – 21.  The two teams could not be separated in the final quarter and with 90 seconds remaining the scores were tied.  As Storm I sent Storm II flying all over the court to secure an offensive rebound they regained the lead.  A sloppy possession from Storm II gave the ball back to Storm I who doubled their lead in next to no time.  Storm II could not find anyway to attack the basket in the final minute as scores from Adriel Maranan and Lewis Pettitt finished the game off for Storm I, allowing them to take the honours 33 – 29.

Good performances in all three games from the two Storm teams, and great experience of having to execute when you’re tired in close games.  Storm I may have won the first inter-club battle of the season, but Storm II will be eager to make amends when the teams next meet.  Great work Under 14s!
