SBL Under 16s II get the job done in style

Dorset Storm Under 16s II got off to a perfect start in the Solent League on Friday night.

Facing Dorchester in their first game of the season, Storm II got off to a flying start as Michael Stevenson netted eight of the first 10 points prior to a Dorchester timeout.  Storm continued their good offensive

performance as they raced to a 20 – 6 first quarter lead.  Alex Kapuskinski benefited from some heads up play from Storm guards as he slashed to the basket on the break many times during the second quarter.  Storm II’s half time lead was 35 – 10.  Dorchester came fighting back in the second half, opening up with a4 – 2 burst.  Tom Hennessy netted twice though to get Storm back on course as they finish the quarter strongly.  In the final quarter both teams traded baskets but Storm were always in control as they finished 58 – 20 winners.

Storm II would play Weymouth in the final match of the tournament.  Weymouth opened the scoring before Kapuskinski and Hester scored for Storm.  By the penultimate minute of the opening quarter the game was tied at nine.  Two baskets from Jordan James and a tough put back from Kapuskinski gave Storm a 15 – 9 lead at the end of quarter one.  A tight second quarter ensued with neither team being able to control the game, Storm still held a six point lead at half time, 23 – 17.  Both teams stepped up defensively in the second half, but good play from Richard Morse and Hennessy saw Storm take a 10 point lead into the final quarter, 29 – 19.  Storm looked comfortable for much of the final quarter until a 8 – 2 run from Weymouth brought them to within four points 34 – 30 with two minutes to go.  Storm then became nervous from the foul line, managing to convert just three from 12 in the second half.  Scores in the final minutes from James and Kapuskinski saw Storm home 38 – 34.

Two really good performances from the Storm II, where every player contributed when called upon.  A big thank you to the support from the sideline and congratulations to all the players.
